The art of creating Harris Tweed® is steeped in tradition and an unwavering commitment to quality. Among the myriad of colours and patterns we produce, muted pink stands out as a soft, elegant hue that requires a meticulous process to perfect.
Muted pink is a colour that speaks of subtlety and warmth, reminiscent of the heather-draped moors and soft sunsets over the Outer Hebrides. Translating this natural beauty into fabric demands not only skill but also an acute understanding of colour blending. Every piece of Harris Tweed® is a reflection of the landscapes that surround us, and muted pink is no exception.
The magic of muted pink lies in the blending process, where different shades of dyed wool are combined with natural tones to achieve the perfect softness. This process requires an artist’s eye and a deep understanding of colour theory.
Our colourists work with a palette that includes blush pinks, warm creams, and cool greys, blending these hues in precise proportions. The goal is to mimic the beauty of the Hebridean landscape—a pink that feels timeless, not trendy, and complements the other rich tones often found in Harris Tweed® designs.
Carding is the first critical step in the journey of our wool. Raw, freshly sheared wool is carefully cleaned and dyed before it is carded. For our muted pink, achieving the perfect base tone involves blending natural undyed wool with precise amounts of dyed wool in shades of pink, cream, orange and sometimes even a hint of green to create depth.
The secret lies in balance. Too much of one colour can overpower the rich blend we aim for, while too little might leave the pink appearing washed out. Through careful adjustments and years of expertise, our Shawbost Mill workers ensure the carded wool embodies the first hints of the muted pink hue.
Once the wool is carded, it moves to the spinning stage, where it is transformed into yarn. Spinning twists the fibres together, creating a strong yet soft thread that holds the blended colours together seamlessly.
After weaving, finishing, and pressing, the final fabric reveals its true character. The muted pink appears soft and inviting, with subtle variations that add texture and depth. It’s a colour that pairs beautifully with earthy tones, making it a versatile choice for everything from tailored jackets to cosy accessories.
