Our Values: Ethical, Natural, Sustainable

In an age when sustainability is gaining the recognition it demands, the unchanging characteristics of Harris Tweed are more valuable than ever.

Harris Tweed Hebrides cloth is woven by hand without the aid of automation or electricity, using natural materials. As consumers seek ethically-made, beautiful products designed to stand the test of time, a new generation of textile buyers is emerging. Focused on quality, not quantity; on transparency, responsibility, low volume, skilled creation.

They are the New Luxury Pioneers and we design for them. Harris Tweed Hebrides takes seriously our commitment to caring for the people, animals and environment so instrumental to the creation of our cloth. We stand for championing craft, local communities, responsible manufacturing and sustainable materials, to help you make more conscious and considered decisions.

We are always striving to exceed modern sustainability standards; our growing list of independent certifications offer unprecedented peace of mind.

Single Country of Origin

Our fabrics are certified by British Wool, created from Pure New Wool from sheep farmed on the hillsides of the British Isles; spun and dyed in our 100-year-old mill on Shawbost in the Outer Hebrides; and handwoven in the nearby homes of indigenous Hebridean islanders using generational artisanal skills originated in 1840.

This uniquely localised supply chain places Harris Tweed Hebrides in an elite group of brands worldwide exclusively producing single country of origin fabrics.

Low Carbon Footprint

The Outer Hebrides are islands of long days and dark starry skies. With an average of 1,234 hours of sunshine per year, on Midsummer's Day alone we enjoy 18 1/4 hours of daylight.

We are seeking to use this natural, renewable energy resource at our Shawbost Mill by gradually introducing solar power to further minimise our carbon footprint and lower our greenhouse gas emissions.

Alongside our collective of independent weavers using only foot-operated treadle looms to hand-weave our cloth, we are continuing to do everything we can to be a climate-conscious brand and to mitigate our impact on our beautiful natural environment.

Sustainable Rural Employment

We work with 174 home weavers based throughout the Isle of Harris and Lewis, providing sustainable rural employment to many who live in the most remote communities on the islands.

All our weavers are self-employed and working in their croft homes, which are visited and audited annually by the Harris Tweed Authority. We are indebted to our community; proud to be recognised as an investor in ethical rural employment.

Our mission is to sustain a long-term business that supports the communities of the Outer Hebrides for generations to come.

Low Impact Dyes

At Harris Tweed Hebrides, we stand for championing responsible manufacturing and natural materials. We will never bleach our wool, nor use harmful chemicals in our dyes and finishes, ensuring 100% of our fabric is REACH compliant. These promises are certified byTown End PLC and OEKO TEX.

Animal Welfare

Animal welfare is a core principle of Harris Tweed Hebrides. Our beloved Scottish Cheviot sheep are at the very heart of our brand, and we source all of our wool from British Wool so we can be confident of its provenance. British Wool guarantees no mulesing and adherence to the Animal Welfare Act 2006, based on The Five Freedoms for the care of animals across the wool supply chain.

Legacy

World-class, 100% British heritage cloth. Still handwoven today using generations-old indigenous crafts passed down through our Hebridean islander community, since 1840.
